Get a prescription online: what a doctor can prescribe by message, and what it costs
What a doctor can prescribe online by message, which controlled medicines are excluded, how refills reach the pharmacy you choose, and how October 2026 visit prices compare across seven telehealth services.

The short answer
If your doctor decides it's right for you, a physician can prescribe most non-controlled brand or generic medicines online by message and send them electronically to the pharmacy you choose, including mail-order pharmacies that deliver to your door. While some services tie prescriptions to a single-product subscription or a one-time refill cap, FutureClinic gives you one-to-one access to the same doctor over time, and controlled substances are never prescribed. On FutureClinic, a visit is $40 for the best-fit physician (MD, DO or MBBS) or a chosen doctor's listed price, typically $20 to $100, with no subscription required.
Key facts
- FutureClinic doctors are all physicians (MD, DO or MBBS) across more than 60 specialties who can prescribe non-controlled medicines by message, including several months at once for a stable medicine when they judge it safe, and they never prescribe controlled substances.
- Online refill rules vary by service, such as up to 90 days once in 12 months on GoodRx Care, while a FutureClinic prescription goes to the pharmacy you choose, including mail-order delivery, with a cash discount coupon.
- As of October 2026, cash-pay online prescription visits range from $19 with a GoodRx Care membership ($39 to $70 without one) and $25 on Lemonaid to $89 on Teladoc, while FutureClinic is $40 for the best-fit doctor or typically $20 to $100 for a chosen doctor, with no subscription needed.
A doctor can prescribe most non-controlled medicines by message and send them electronically to the pharmacy you choose, and the central difference across online services is who reads your case and what happens after the first fill. On FutureClinic, a specific physician with an MD, DO or MBBS degree reads your history and answers by message, never a nurse practitioner or physician assistant. No form is approved in bulk, and your plan includes a Human Signature, a short video or voice note recorded live for you.
Do you want another service and its requirements, like monthly subscriptions or one-time refill limits, or a doctor you can reach directly? If you want a bundled product plan or a single refill, those services are a strong option. If you wanted an expert doctor with nothing attached, FutureClinic lets you message the same doctor over time with no subscription required. FutureClinic is not for emergencies; call 911, or call or text 988 in a mental-health crisis.
What can a doctor prescribe online by message?
If your doctor decides it's right for you, a FutureClinic physician can prescribe almost any non-controlled brand or generic medicine by message, order discounted labs, and follow up in the same chat. FutureClinic has over 300 doctors, both generalists and specialists. Across more than 60 specialties, a family or internal medicine doctor can manage blood pressure, cholesterol or diabetes, and a doctor can treat depression or anxiety with non-controlled medicines like SSRIs, SNRIs, bupropion, buspirone or hydroxyzine. Dermatologists treat acne, rosacea, eczema or hair loss, and those offering isotretinoin (Accutane) manage it by message, iPLEDGE included.
Your doctor can also help with other problems in their specialty, such as a dermatologist treating both hair loss and eczema. Every FutureClinic doctor you see works from one medical record. Your doctor sells no products and earns nothing extra for any prescription or test.
Which medicines won't online services prescribe?
FutureClinic doctors never prescribe controlled medicines: stimulants, benzodiazepines (such as Xanax or Klonopin), opioids, testosterone, and some sleep and weight-loss medicines (phentermine among them). In DailyMed's DEA Schedule fields, mixed amphetamine salts and Percocet are CII, testosterone cypionate is CIII, and alprazolam, zolpidem, tramadol and phentermine are CIV. Sesame, Counsel Health, Push Health, Teladoc, Walgreens Virtual Healthcare and HealthTap also prescribe no controlled substances.
Some services also restrict other drugs, like gabapentin and sildenafil: Push Health will not refill gabapentin or anxiety drugs online, Amwell excludes ED drugs and gabapentin, and Teladoc excludes Viagra and Cialis. Hims & Hers is an exception, selling compounded testosterone cypionate from $79 a month as of October 2026 (labs and Rx required, not in every state).
How do online prescription refills and renewals work?
Many services cap refills as short-term care: GoodRx Care refills up to 90 days once in 12 months (no new drugs); CVS MinuteClinic renews 30 days twice a year or 90 days once a year; Teladoc's general medical providers renew 30 days twice a year (excluding hair loss, ED and GLP-1s, while primary care providers prescribe maintenance drugs up to a year); Amazon One Medical needs a new request if refills were omitted; and Push Health calls refills short-term.
By Doctronic's account, its AI renews about 190 maintenance drugs (excluding controlled substances, injectables and short-course antibiotics) for Utah residents without a doctor's appointment for $4 per renewal as of October 2026, routing unclear cases to a physician. If you want an automated Utah renewal from that list, Doctronic fits that need. At FutureClinic, we believe AI is a tool for doctors and the doctor is in charge of every case. Health problems have nuance, and only an expert knows when an AI makes a mistake. Our AI works behind the scenes like a chief resident, gathering history and never giving medical advice by itself.
On FutureClinic, you message the same doctor over time to adjust doses, swap an irritating cream, or compare new labs with last year's. For a stable medicine, your doctor can prescribe several months at once when they judge it safe.
How does an e-prescription reach your pharmacy, and what does it cost?
Amazon One Medical, Teladoc, Lemonaid Health and Push Health send e-prescriptions to a chosen pharmacy; HealthTap says most arrive within 2 hours. On FutureClinic, prescriptions go to the pharmacy you choose, including mail-order pharmacies that deliver to your door, with a cash discount coupon. Insurance may cover the medicine at the pharmacy, and FutureClinic helps get a prior authorization when needed.
Zocdoc (as of March 2026) puts uninsured telehealth visits at $40 to $90. As of October 2026, cash visits include Walgreens Virtual Healthcare at $33 to $79 ($33 cholesterol, $49 blood pressure refill) and Teladoc or CVS MinuteClinic Virtual Care at $89. Hims & Hers sells by subscription (generic sildenafil from $22/month; weight-loss membership $39 first month, then $149/month, medicine extra, as of October 2026), assuming you stay subscribed to keep getting the medicine.
On FutureClinic, a visit is $40 for the best-fit doctor, or a chosen doctor's listed price, typically $20 to $100, with no subscription needed. One visit can cover several months of a stable prescription when safe. Most doctors also offer an optional membership: unlimited care with that doctor, cancel any time, typically $25 to $100 a month.

Questions, answered.
- Can an online doctor prescribe antibiotics, blood pressure medicine or skin treatments by message?
- Yes, if your doctor decides it's right for you. On FutureClinic, a state-licensed physician (MD, DO or MBBS) can evaluate your history and photos by message and prescribe non-controlled medicines across more than 60 specialties, including primary care, dermatology and non-controlled mental health treatments.
- Can I get controlled substances like Adderall, Xanax or opioid pain medicine prescribed on FutureClinic?
- No. FutureClinic doctors never prescribe controlled medicines, which excludes stimulants, benzodiazepines, opioids, testosterone, and some sleep and weight-loss medicines such as phentermine.
- How do I get a multi-month prescription refill online without a monthly subscription?
- Many telehealth refill apps limit you to a one-time 30-day or 90-day supply or require a monthly subscription. - Does health insurance cover a prescription written by an online doctor?
- FutureClinic visits are cash-pay, and your prescription is sent electronically to the pharmacy you choose, including local and mail-order pharmacies. At the pharmacy, you can use your health insurance to cover the medicine or use the discount coupon FutureClinic texts you for the best available cash price, and FutureClinic helps with prior authorizations when your insurer requires one.
