Claude for health: what it can do, and how to reach a doctor from Claude

Compare Claude for health, ChatGPT Health, and FutureClinic: what Claude's health connectors do, Anthropic's medical advice rules, and how to message a licensed physician from Claude for $40 a visit.

Dr. Usama Syed, MDReviewed November 2026 · 7 min read

The short answer

Claude can summarize connected health records, explain lab results in plain language, and prepare questions for appointments, while Anthropic's policies state that Claude cannot provide medical guidance or diagnose conditions without a qualified professional's review. By adding FutureClinic to Claude, you can bring your context straight to a licensed physician (MD, DO or MBBS) who reads your case, answers with a live Human Signature note, and can diagnose and prescribe with no subscription required.

Key facts

  • Anthropic introduced personal health connections, in beta, for US Claude Pro and Max users on January 11, 2026 (including Apple Health, Android Health Connect, HealthEx, and Function Health), while stating that Claude is not a medical device and requires a qualified professional to review high-risk medical recommendations.
  • Claude for Healthcare is built for health organizations, and HIPAA-ready products with Business Associate Agreements are only for organizations on Enterprise plans; individual Free, Pro, and Max plans cannot enable HIPAA and are covered instead by Anthropic's Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy.
  • FutureClinic connects to Claude as a custom connector on all Claude plans, letting you message one of over 300 licensed US physicians across more than 60 specialties for $40 for the best-fit doctor, or a chosen doctor's listed price, typically $20 to $100 (as of October 2026), with no subscription required.

Claude and ChatGPT Health provide instant explanations of test results and prepare questions for an appointment, while stopping short of diagnosing conditions or prescribing treatment. Adding FutureClinic to Claude lets you message an expert physician who can review your health context, diagnose your condition, and treat you if your doctor decides it's right for you, with no subscription required.

On FutureClinic, a specific doctor reads your whole case and answers you with a Human Signature: a short video or voice note recorded live for you. No form is approved in bulk. That same doctor can help with other problems in their specialty, and every FutureClinic doctor you see works from one medical record. We believe AI is a tool for doctors, and the doctor is in charge of every case. Most health problems have nuance and need one-to-one attention, and only an expert can tell when an AI has made a mistake or is heading to the wrong answer. FutureClinic's AI works behind the scenes like a chief resident, gathering your history so the doctor can move faster, and it never gives medical advice by itself. FutureClinic is not for emergencies; call 911, or call or text 988 in a mental-health crisis.

What can Claude do with your health questions and records?

On January 11, 2026, Anthropic introduced personal health connections for US Claude Pro and Max subscribers (as of October 2026). Beta links with Apple Health and Android Health Connect (updated August 25, 2026) give read-only access to activity, sleep, nutrition, and vitals. Directory connectors also link records and labs via HealthEx and Function Health (added January 2026), Elfcare (added July 2026), and athenahealth in beta (added September 2026). Anthropic says Claude summarizes history, explains test results in plain language, spots patterns, prepares appointment questions, and does not train models on health data.

Claude for Healthcare (announced January 11, 2026; clarified February 7, 2026) is built for healthcare providers, payers, and health tech firms. Per Anthropic's HIPAA guide (updated October 20, 2026), HIPAA-ready products and Business Associate Agreements apply only to Enterprise plans. Team and individual plans (Free, Pro, Max) cannot enable HIPAA; personal data is covered by Anthropic's Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy (effective January 12, 2026).

What does Anthropic say Claude should not do alone?

Anthropic's mobile help articles (updated August 25, 2026) state: "We are not a medical device and cannot provide medical guidance. Always consult a licensed professional." A June 27, 2025 Anthropic study noted that Claude cannot provide medical diagnoses, and the athenahealth listing notes it "doesn't diagnose conditions or make clinical decisions."

Anthropic's Usage Policy requires human oversight. Under the September 15, 2025 policy, medical diagnosis and patient care require that "a qualified professional in that field must review the content or decision." Under the update taking effect November 12, 2026 (see the October 8, 2026 post), diagnosing conditions, adjusting medications or doses, or interpreting symptoms or labs for a treatment plan requires that "A qualified person must meaningfully review a High-risk AI Recommendation," with power to change it and disclosure that AI was used. The Software Directory Policy (updated October 27, 2026) applies these rules to all healthcare connectors.

How do Claude, ChatGPT Health, and FutureClinic compare?

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health on January 7, 2026, opening it to US adults on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans on July 23, 2026. Per OpenAI's help center (updated October 27, 2026), it "is not intended for diagnosis or treatment" and has no clinicians. On FutureClinic, a real doctor reads every case and decides, you keep the same doctor, and no subscription is required; real care from a doctor takes hours, not seconds.

Do you want an AI tool to help read your lab numbers and records, or do you want a doctor of your own who can diagnose and treat you? If you want an instant explanation of a test result or questions for an appointment, Claude and ChatGPT Health are strong options, whereas if you wanted direct access to an expert physician with no subscription required, FutureClinic gives you that.

How to reach a doctor from Claude with FutureClinic

While Vital Care Finder (added July 2026) searches for doctors without booking care, FutureClinic lets you message a physician from Claude. FutureClinic has over 300 doctors. They cover more than 60 specialties, including generalists and specialists, and every clinician is an MD, DO or MBBS physician, never a nurse practitioner or physician assistant. Replies typically come within a few hours, and almost always the same day or the next.

Messaging the same doctor over time builds continuity: a dermatologist treating hair loss can swap an irritating cream or treat acne or eczema in their specialty, while an internist can compare lab trends, adjust a dose, or order discounted labs. Your doctor earns nothing extra for any prescription or test. If your doctor decides it's right for you, they can prescribe any non-controlled medicine (no stimulants, benzodiazepines, opioids, testosterone, or phentermine) to the pharmacy you choose, including mail-order pharmacies that deliver to your door, and write several months for a stable medicine when safe. Insurance may cover your medicine at the pharmacy (FutureClinic helps with prior authorizations), or a discount coupon gives the best cash price. As of October 2026, a visit is $40 for the best-fit doctor, or a chosen doctor's listed price, typically $20 to $100, with no subscription required, and most offer an optional membership for unlimited care with that doctor, cancel any time, typically $25 to $100 a month.

Questions, answered.

Can Claude diagnose a medical condition or prescribe medication by itself?
No. Anthropic states in its help center articles (updated August 25, 2026) that Claude is not a medical device and cannot provide medical guidance. Under Anthropic's Usage Policy, diagnosing a condition or recommending or adjusting a medication is a high-risk medical use that requires a qualified human professional to meaningfully review the recommendation before it is delivered.
Is personal health data shared on Claude Free, Pro, or Max covered by HIPAA?
No. According to Anthropic's help articles on HIPAA and Business Associate Agreements (updated October 20 and October 23, 2026), HIPAA-ready products are only available to commercial organizations on Enterprise plans. Individual consumer plans (Free, Pro, and Max) and Team plans cannot turn on HIPAA, and consumer health data on Claude.ai is governed instead by Anthropic's Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy.
How much does it cost to reach a doctor on FutureClinic from Claude?
Adding the FutureClinic connector in Claude is free. When you want a physician to take your case, you pay $40 to be matched with the best-fit doctor, or you can choose a specific doctor at their listed price, typically $20 to $100 (as of October 2026), with no subscription required. Most doctors also offer an optional membership for unlimited care with that doctor, cancel any time, typically $25 to $100 a month.
Who reviews my case when I use FutureClinic through Claude?
Every FutureClinic case goes to a state-licensed human physician holding an MD, DO or MBBS degree, never a nurse practitioner or a physician assistant. FutureClinic's AI assistant gathers your history and prepares a summary that you confirm first, and then your chosen doctor reviews the full case, makes every medical decision, and replies with a written plan and a live-recorded Human Signature video or voice note.
