A doctor answers
Online prescription refill: how to renew a medicine you already take, and what it costs
A FutureClinic doctor can renew a medicine by message ($40 for the best-fit doctor, no subscription required), with the same doctor next time. Five other services charge $33 to $129 a cash visit as of October 2026.

The short answer
Check your bottle label first: with refills left, your pharmacy fills the next supply; with none left, or once it expires, you need a renewal. At FutureClinic, a physician can renew your prescription by message for $40 with the best-fit doctor (or typically $20 to $100 for a chosen doctor), no subscription required.
Key facts
- Non-controlled prescriptions allow refills for 12 months in 29 states per the American Medical Association, and some states let pharmacists dispense a 72-hour to 90-day emergency supply.
- FutureClinic doctors can prescribe several months of a stable medicine when they judge it safe, while Teladoc's General Medical service renews 30 days up to twice a calendar year.
- You message the same doctor in the same chat thread next time, and your doctor's plan comes with a personal video they record for you.
Online, a doctor can renew most medicines that aren't controlled and send the new prescription to the pharmacy you choose. On FutureClinic, a state-licensed physician (MD, DO or MBBS) reads your history by message, replies with a video, and can prescribe several months of a stable medicine at once when they judge it safe. Your next refill goes back to that same doctor, in the same chat. Real care from a doctor takes hours, not seconds: replies come typically within a few hours, almost always the same day or the next.
What is the difference between a prescription refill and a renewal?
A refill is a supply your prescriber already authorized, whereas a renewal is a new prescription after refills run out (Express Scripts Pharmacy). Most states with a limit allow refills for 12 months (29 states in the American Medical Association's 2025 table), and five allow 15 to 24 months.
With refills left, order at CVS Pharmacy or Walgreens; a VA pharmacy guide advises reordering the day a fill arrives. With none left, your pharmacy can contact your prescriber, or a FutureClinic doctor can renew it by message. If you cannot reach a doctor in time, ask your pharmacist about an emergency fill: a 2021 Innovations in Pharmacy review notes some states allow a 72-hour, 30-day or 90-day emergency supply of non-controlled drugs.
How much does an online prescription refill cost?
A FutureClinic visit costs $40 for the best-fit doctor, or a chosen doctor's listed price, typically $20 to $100, with no subscription required. Five other online services charge $33 to $129 for a one-time cash visit as of October 2026, and three of them cap renewals at once or twice a year.
| Service | Who renews it | Price (October 2026) | Same doctor next time? |
|---|---|---|---|
| FutureClinic | Physicians only (MD, DO or MBBS) | $40 for the best-fit doctor; no subscription required | Yes, in the same chat thread |
| GoodRx Care | "Licensed healthcare providers" | $49 visit ($19 with Companion plan) | Once in 12 months, then your own provider |
| Walgreens Virtual Healthcare | "Doctors and nurse practitioners" | $49 BP or asthma; $33 cholesterol | Once in 12 months (blood pressure, asthma) |
| Teladoc General Medical | Doctors and nurse practitioners | $89 cash ($0+ with insurance) | Depends on your benefits; two 30-day renewals a year |
| Sesame | Doctor, NP or PA | From $34 a visit | You pick a provider each visit |
| PlushCare | "Board-certified primary care doctors" | $129 a visit + membership | Book a follow-up visit |
As of October 2026, GoodRx Care renews up to 90 days once in 12 months, Walgreens Virtual Healthcare gives one 90-day blood pressure or 30-day asthma script in 12 months, Teladoc renews 30 days up to twice a calendar year, and PlushCare adds a membership after a 30-day trial.
Over a year, Teladoc's two cash renewals cost $178 in visit fees, medicine extra, for 60 days of medicine, and Lemonaid Health's $75-a-month blood pressure plan costs $900, medicine included (as of October 2026). On FutureClinic, if your doctor prescribes six months of a stable medicine at a time, two visits ($40 best-fit, then typically $20 to $100) plus four 90-tablet fills of lisinopril 10 mg at Cost Plus ($45.72 in all, with shipping, as of October 2026) run $105.72 to $185.72 for the year. A 2018 review also linked two- to four-month scripts with better adherence. See also doctor visit cost without insurance.
What does a doctor check before renewing a daily medicine?
Before renewing, a physician checks that your dose is still working and whether labs or readings are due, writing a new prescription if your doctor decides it's right for you. The American Medical Association notes yearly visits are not always required for non-controlled maintenance medicines.
Share your medicine name, dose, duration, and a bottle photo, plus recent labs, wider records, or wearable readings. Per FDA DailyMed labels, routine checks include:
- Thyroid (levothyroxine): TSH every 6 to 12 months on a stable dose (90 tablets of levothyroxine 50 mcg on Cost Plus cost $7.74 before $5.25 shipping as of October 2026).
- High blood pressure (lisinopril), cholesterol (atorvastatin) and diabetes (metformin): Kidney and potassium labs on lisinopril, lipids on statins, and eGFR and B12 on metformin. Your doctor can order discounted labs.
- Birth control (norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol): Blood pressure (CDC's 2024 guidance supports home readings and up to 13 packs).
- Antidepressant (sertraline): How you've been feeling since the last renewal.
- Rescue inhaler (albuterol): How often you've needed it.
FutureClinic doctors don't prescribe controlled medicines (stimulants, benzodiazepines, opioids, testosterone, or controlled sleep and weight-loss drugs like phentermine); ask your original prescriber for those. FutureClinic is not for emergencies: call 911, or call or text 988 in a mental-health crisis.
Why a doctor of your own beats a one-time refill service
When a FutureClinic doctor renews your levothyroxine, you message that same doctor in the same chat thread next time: they compare your new thyroid lab against the last one, talk through side effects or other options if the medicine stops suiting you, and send the next several months when safe. GoodRx Care and Walgreens Virtual Healthcare cap renewals at once in 12 months, and GoodRx Care then sends you back to your own provider.
Every FutureClinic clinician is a board-certified, state-licensed physician (MD, DO or MBBS), verified before seeing patients, and never a nurse practitioner or physician assistant. A specific doctor reads your whole case, no form is approved in bulk, and your doctor's plan includes a video they record for you (the Human Signature). In Utah, Doctronic's AI renews about 190 medicines where "a human physician does not need to approve each individual renewal," routing flagged cases to a physician. At FutureClinic, we believe AI is a tool for doctors and the doctor is in charge: only an expert catches AI mistakes, so our AI gathers history like a chief resident and never gives medical advice by itself.
Ask yourself: did you want a refill service with annual caps and plans, or a doctor of your own who keeps renewing what works? If you want a monthly bundle like Sesame's Everyday Rx (from $29/month paid yearly with 350+ drugs at $1, as of October 2026) or Lemonaid Health's plan, it's a strong option; if you wanted an expert doctor directly, FutureClinic gives you that with nothing attached.
You never deal with insurance for the visit, and your doctor earns nothing extra for any prescription or test. Prescriptions go to the pharmacy you choose, local or mail-order, where insurance may cover the medicine or a discount coupon can lower the cash price. FutureClinic has over 300 doctors. They span more than 60 specialties, generalists and specialists alike, so your doctor can help with other problems in their specialty, and every FutureClinic doctor you see works from your one medical record.

Questions, answered.
- Can I get a 90-day or multi-month prescription renewal online?
- Yes, for a stable medicine that isn't controlled: a FutureClinic physician can prescribe several months at once when they judge it safe, and you keep the same doctor in one chat thread for the next renewal. Several other services cap renewals (as of October 2026): Teladoc's General Medical service renews a 30-day supply up to twice a calendar year, Walgreens Virtual Healthcare gives one 90-day blood pressure refill in 12 months, and GoodRx Care renews up to 90 days once in 12 months.
- What should I have ready before messaging a doctor for a prescription renewal?
- Have the exact medication name, strength, dose, and how long you have taken it, along with a photo of your current pill bottle or pharmacy label. For medicines that require periodic monitoring, such as blood pressure pills, combined birth control, or thyroid hormone, sharing recent home blood pressure readings or recent lab results helps your doctor review your case faster.
- Can I refill a controlled medicine like Adderall, Xanax or testosterone online?
- Not through the online services compared here: FutureClinic, Teladoc, GoodRx Care, Walgreens Virtual Healthcare, Sesame, PlushCare and Doctronic's Utah AI renewals all exclude controlled medicines as of October 2026. FutureClinic doctors don't prescribe stimulants, benzodiazepines, opioids, testosterone, or some sleep and weight-loss medicines such as phentermine, so ask the prescriber who wrote it for the next prescription.
- What can I do if I run out of pills today and cannot reach my doctor?
- Ask your pharmacist whether your state allows an emergency continuity-of-therapy refill. According to a 2021 multistate legal review in Innovations in Pharmacy, some states allow a pharmacist to dispense a 72-hour, 30-day or 90-day emergency supply of a non-controlled maintenance medicine while you arrange a doctor's renewal. A FutureClinic doctor can also renew a non-controlled medicine by message, with replies typically within a few hours, almost always the same day or the next.
- Do I need an office visit to renew a prescription?
- Not always. The American Medical Association says yearly visits are not always required to keep renewing non-controlled maintenance medicines; whether to renew stays the prescriber's call. On FutureClinic, a doctor reviews your case by message and can order lab tests when one is due.
